Cancer Cell

Cancer is the most feared and notorious life-snatching disease that man has ever known, second only to AIDS. The term ‘Cancer’ is used to describe the medical condition where certain cells in the body multiply rapidly, at an abnormal rate. The multiplication is without any control and that is exactly what makes cancer deadly.

Cancer typically affects the most basic part of the body: cells. In a normal and healthy condition of the body, worn out cells die and are replaced by new cells. However, in cases where the old cells refuse to die, they accumulate and form a tissue. This tissue is the tumor and has undesired effects on the body. Having understood this, it is also important to know that all such tumors are not harmful. Benign tumors are those which can be surgically removed from the body and does not do much harm. On the other hand, malignant tumors spread actively through other tissues and infest them. Malignant tumors are cancerous.

A person can be affected by cancer due to several reasons. Most common are: tobacco, sun’s harmful rays, genetic pass down, disproportionate diet, exposure to toxic chemicals, cellular rays or radioactive rays, hormones, obesity and stress. Several products that are a part of people’s everyday routine, such as antiperspirants, deodorants and hair dyes can instigate cancer too. Cancer affects the body in several stages. Though there is no assured cure of cancer available currently, if tumors are detected in early stages, most can be cured.

It is the non-availability of a definite cure that makes cancer lethal and an intriguing subject. There are several films and documentaries made on cancer that aim to promote awareness about cancer and urge people to routinely get themselves checked for any symptoms. Today, there are many experienced doctors and scientists who are engaged in the cause of finding a cure. Many have had major-breakthroughs since cancer was discovered, and have pledged to uproot the very cause of the disease.
